A parent's overview of where to send a science-curious, robot-building, game-designing eleven-year-old next summer — and which programmes to bookmark for the years after.
§ 01The verdict, in three paragraphs
The single best pick for summer 2027 is Euro Space Center in Transinne, Belgium — the only European programme that combines all four of: an explicit English week, the right age band (9–18), a proper residential format, and ESA affiliation. Email camps@eurospacecenter.be now to be notified when the 2027 dates publish, and watch for the booking window in autumn 2026. The popular English weeks fill.
Age 12 in 2027 is a last hard year. Most premium STEM residentials gate at 13+ — Smallpeice's deeper courses, the Royal Institution, Immerse, Mission Discovery, Trinity Walton, Imperial, DLR Summer School, ETH Studienwoche, Polimi TECHCAMP, AstraZenecas Sommarforskarskola, ATU Denmark. Summer 2028, the menu triples. So the 2027 strategy is: one good international anchor week + a Nordic day camp + an FLL season at home + a small bookmark list to revisit each autumn.
The single most-leveraged Norwegian move isn't a camp at all — it's joining a FIRST LEGO League team for the 2026/27 season. Techløftet Innlandet pays the registration fee and the kit, the regional final is at Håkons Hall in Lillehammer on 9 November 2026, and Vitensenteret Innlandet runs the entire local talent-identification pipeline. § 02The shortlist
Scored across content fit, age fit, English availability, and logistical reach from Oslo. The first five are the realistic decision space; six through ten are excellent if the calendar allows.
Transinne, Belgium · ESA-affiliated
The flagship pick. Confirmed English weeks in 2026 (20–24 Jul, 3–7 Aug, 24–28 Aug). Direct Oslo→Brussels, train to Libramont, bus 61 to the centre. The only European camp that hits every constraint at once.
Vantaa, Finland · National science centre
Pair with a Helsinki or Tallinn family trip. Tickets opened 23 March for the 2026 season; expect the same pattern for 2027 — set an alarm for 10:00 EET that day.
Isle of Wight, United Kingdom
Physics as sailing. The strongest "screen-free, hands-on engineering" match on the entire list. Applied science outdoors, four nights away from home, well-run, social.
Roncade, Italy · near Venice
Closest single-place match to all of his interests. English-medium throughout. Easy from Oslo via Venice.
Abingdon (Oxford) or Winchester
The best single "maker week" available in the English language for this age. Hardware-heavy by design.
Regen, Bavaria · airport shuttle included
Strong backup to Euro Space Center if dates clash or English weeks fill. Junior cohort 7–12 is a precise age fit.
Dorset / Pembrokeshire, UK
The highest signal-to-noise programme on the list. Apply March–May 2027.
Wales / Northern Ireland / Scotland
Best price-to-quality in the UK system. Bookings open November 2026. Smallpeice graduates into deeper, longer courses at age 13+.
Normandy, France · château boarding
Premium price — but the only English-language AI + robotics residential of any depth in France. Verify the lower age boundary by email.
Various Roman sites, UK
He ages into DigClub from DigCamp in 2027 — the bracket transition lines up exactly. Pair with a UK trip.
§ 03Secondary window
Thinner pickings. Most STEM residentials cluster in the long summer break.
SPIEL Essen, 22–25 October 2026. World's biggest board-game fair, with kid halls, prototype designers, and design workshops. Not a "camp" but a four-day family pilgrimage that nails the game-design + invention angle. Pair with a German science museum — Phaeno Wolfsburg is closest en route.
Euro Space Center autumn stages, 19–23 and 26–30 Oct. Confirmed, but language likely French during the Wallonia autumn break. Worth emailing to ask if any English week is added.
Edinburgh Science Festival, 4–19 April 2027. An Easter-break alternative if autumn fills up. Glider Challenge, forensic CSI, Invention Trolley — exactly the brief.
§ 04The Norwegian rail
Three Norwegian programmes that punch far above any single camp. None of them run in summer; all of them shape what camps are reachable later.
Talentsenter i realfag — Oslo, at Norsk Teknisk Museum. Free, year-round, hands-on design plus maths, chemistry, physics, biology. Travel reimbursed. The peer group is the point: a cohort of kindred high-potential kids. Applications open 9 March, deadline 17 April, for 7th-grade entry from autumn 2027.
Reale Talenter — Vitensenteret Innlandet, Gjøvik. STEM talent programme for 8th + 9th grade from Hamar, Gjøvik, Kongsvinger. Free, six days a year, transport reimbursed. The only systematic local talent-ID for ungdomsskole STEM in the region. He's too young right now; bookmark for spring 2027 to apply for the autumn-2027 cycle.
Forskerfabrikken Sommerskole — Norwegian-language day camps. Screen-free is their explicit pitch. He ages out by summer 2027, so this is a summer-2026 option only. Register at 09:00 sharp on 5 March 2026 — popular sessions fill in minutes.
§ 05The pipeline
Many are run via teachers. The parent's job is asking the school to register — most take the teacher minutes and cost nothing.
